LAY LEADER MINISTRY Print E-mail

The Purpose of the Lay Leader is to be an advocate for, and an encourager of, the laity who are part of our family of faith. One by one, within the community of faith and through the ministries of the church, the Lay Leader invites people to meet Jesus so they may mature in faith, magnify God and grow into their individual calling to minister in Christ's name.

The Lay Leader is a connection, a bridge, between laity and clergy, as well as a bridge-builder between the vision of the church and the current reality. In his/her role as encourager, the Lay Leader:

1. Fosters awareness and enthusiasm for the ministry opportunities available to all lay people
2. Communicates regularly with the pastor(s) regarding the mission of the church and emerging ministry needs within the church.
3. Serves as a liaison between the laity and leadership of the church by serving on Leadership Council, Financial Resources Ministry, Staff-Parish Relations committee, the church charge conference and the annual conference. The Lay Leader is responsible for interpreting the actions and decisions of these groups to the laity at large.
4. Is aware of training opportunities for laity, and encourages laity to take advantage of these.

In short, the Lay Leader is a listener, a communicator, a trainer, and a supporter of the shared vision of the congregation. Underpinning all of these tasks is the call to pray for the ministries and members of FUMC.
